There’s not much to say about the KILLER C-FLATS. They are just a couple of chuckle-heads who like to sing together. Jay Vilhauer and Jason Conner met each other in Driftwood Players’ production of The Music Man in 2012. There they discovered a comedic chemistry and vocal blending that bordered on preternatural. In 2013, they teamed up again as Scarecrow and Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. Equipped with brains and heart, the duo enjoys reviving 1980’s harmonies at various karaoke venues around town.
JAY has been performing music since he was about 3 years old, when he went door to door asking if he could sing a song for a nickel. He still makes about the same amount per song over 50 years later. Fortunately, he performs as a sideline after putting in a full day as Director of Engineering for Physio-Control (a defibrillator manufacturer in Redmond). Jay began his career as a band director in public schools after receiving a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin. Over the years, he has performed both original and published works on keyboards, vocals, guitar, bass, trumpet, french horn, and percussion in dozens of musical groups and organizations, including professional dance/rock/cover bands and community groups. He’s no stranger to being on “the big stage” himself, and has recently been seen as Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man, the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, and Vito in Thugs! – A Musical Mafiasco, all at the Driftwood Players in Edmonds. You can soon see him there again as Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, opening on April 17th (Shameless plug acknowledged). Jay has also performed in the orchestra and served as Conductor and Musical Director for musicals at Seattle Musical Theatre, Northwest Savoyards, and Madrona Children’s Theatre. JASON began his acting career in 2011 as a principal character in A Strange Disappearance of Bees at Driftwood Players. His first foray into the world of collaborative art had him hooked and the next year he landed his first main stage role as Radar in M*A*S*H. Jason’s first musical was The Music Man, and he developed into a theatrical triple-threat by dancing and singing his way through “Shipoopi,” sometimes at a breakneck tempo. His favorite character was Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, and he has reprised the role for publicity in Edmonds, including being a feature of the annual Edmonds Historical Society fundraiser. Performing is only one of his hobbies though, which include ice hockey, diving, and poetry. During the day, Jason works for NOAA as a fisheries biologist, and every year he is deployed on boats in Alaska to research fish populations in the Bering Sea.
